As the Title suggests I am a vet, and proud of it, and proud of all those that wear the uniform of the United States of America. You name it we'll talk about it. Politics, sports and much more. However, I am also very interested in what is happening to this great country of ours, politically and socially...So SOUND OFF PRIVATE!!!

Freedom Isn't Free

I received this poem in an e-mail today from my brother-in-law in Kansas City and knew I just had to pass it on. I know not the author...but whoever he is, deserves a big salute.

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"

When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington
No, freedom isn't free.

Amen.

So many youth count the days until they are 21, that "magical" day when you can drink.

Some get a 21 that is much more meaningful, only far too soon.

I love that poem. Thanks Sarge! I do not take my freedom for granted and for that I am proud. I have a friend that is a SEAL. I'm going to call him today and tell him how much I appreciate him. Brother in law in KC? Small world.
